Room Temperature Ingredients
Most of Butter + Whisk Little Chef Baking Kit recipes call for ‘room temperature ingredients, why you ask? Because cold ingredients do not blend together well and it results in clumpy frosting, dense cake, and oily muffins.
In other words, recipe fails.
After clean hands (of course) and keep your space clean, its one of the topics I talk about often in kids baking camps. If a recipe calls for room temperature ingredients, use room temperature ingredients. I completely understand having impatient little bakers, who just want to get started. So here’s some quick ways to get those ingredients to room temp, so you and your little chef can start baking!
Why room temperature eggs? Adding cold eggs to room temperature ingredients (like creamed butter and sugar) can harden the butter. This can cause you to have a bunch of little holes in your cupcakes/cakes from the hardened butter pieces.
How to bring eggs to room temperature: It’s easy! Simply place the eggs in a bowl of warm water for 7-10 minutes. I usually do this while I’m getting other ingredients ready. Do not use super hot water– you don’t want to cook your eggs.
Why room temperature milk? Same as adding cold eggs to room temperature ingredients (like creamed butter and sugar) it can harden the butter. This can cause you to have a bunch of little holes in your cupcakes/cakes from the hardened butter pieces.
How to bring milk to room temperature: Simply place your milk in a microwave safe bowl/measuring cup. Heat for 7-12 seconds. You want it slightly warm, but not hot.
When butter is at room temperature, you should be able to press your finger into it and make an indent easily. Firm, but not cold. Lightly softened without being greasy or melty. We talked more about room temperature butter here.
